SCCA Race at Beaverun, Aug 2-3, 2003

I returned to Beaverun the weekend after the PCA race for a pair of SCCA races. This would be the first time most of the SCCA drivers had seen the track so I should have had an advantage. I arrived a bit late but retrieved my car and trailer which had been near the tower, and brought them to the large autocross parking lot and set up my paddock area.

My car would not start on the trailer and I found the permatune ignition box was dead so I put in a old one that came with my car and it fired right up. This was probably the cause of my hot running engine the previous week.

I was pitted next to FORMER GLORY RACING, you can see Bob Fitzpatrick and his "new" MGB-GT V8 on the left. Storm Field (who always brings his bad weather with him!) was supposed to drive this car but it had teething problems with the ignition so he drove the 2nd 4 cylinder MG instead:

The fast V8 Shelby Mustangs and other 911s which were tough competition at the first two races at Pocono were not here, so it was a pretty easy race. I qualified on the pole and lead the race, lapping all but 2 of the other 15 cars with a fast race lap of 1:07.1 which should be the VHS lap record until next year. I was warned about the volume of my car so I removed the spacers in my supertrapps and short shifted on the back straight to keep the revs down near the sound control station.

I put some tape around my oil cooler to help keep the temperatures down by keeping air from going around the cooler. But it seemed fine with the new (old!) ignition box.

On Sunday, the weather was looking quite bad so I decided to leave and skip the second race so I could get home at a good hour and drive more relaxed. But it started POURING before I could get my car all packed up, so I hung out under Bob's tent for a while until I could finish packing up. Then I headed home in good shape with a win and a DNS, with anothe SCCA vintage series race the following weekend.
